What to expect

Welcome to our church! We worship at 8:30 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. every Sunday. St. Stephen’s is located at 1801 W. Brooks, at the corner of West Brooks and McGee in Norman. Below is a Q&A of some common questions from St. Stephen’s visitors about worship time. We hope to see you soon!

  • I'm here, now what?

When you arrive at St. Stephen’s UMC, you can find parking spaces reserved for visitors and guests located in front of our main entrance. When you enter the church, our greeters will be waiting inside to welcome you to the church, to answer your questions, and to hand you a bulletin that will help you follow along with the different parts of our worship service.

  • What's available for kids?

Childcare is available from 8:25 a.m. until noon every Sunday. Sunday School for pre-school through fifth grade is available from 9:40 to 10:40 a.m. A children’s sermon is offered during both worship services. After the children’s sermon, kids in second grade and younger may sit with their parents or accompany Children’s ministries’ staff to Celebration time. Learn more about Children’s Ministries

  • How should I dress?

At St. Stephen’s we do not have a particular dress code. If you come in casual clothes, you won’t be the only one. If you come in business wear, you’ll also fit in just fine. What you can expect is to see people wearing lots of bright colors and expressing their own personality with how they dress!

  • What happens during worship?

Our church worships “in the round,” which means our chairs are arranged in a circle around a table. We are a musical and creative church, so you can expect to sing both traditional and modern songs from our hymnals, led by our pianist and choir. The other parts of our service include praying for each other and our community, reading from the Bible together, and being drawn into God’s story through the preaching of our pastors.

  • What is sunday school?

Between our worship services, from 9:40 to 10:40 a.m., we have Sunday School for adults, youth, and children to learn about religion, spirituality, and social justice. Methodists have been doing small group ministry through our Sunday School classes since we began as a movement! Learn about this week's Sunday School offerings.

  • Can I take communion at your church?

Absolutely! We celebrate communion together the first Sunday of every month and practice an Open Table. That means everyone (baptized or not, Christian or not) is invited to take part because the table belongs to God and not to the church. At our church, we take communion by dipping fresh, homemade bread into grape juice and also always have separate gluten-free bread and juice available.
